If you are a fan of yummy pastries and delectable cakes you probably already know that Kempi Deli is one of the go to places in town. I'm kind of behind the times I guess, as this place re-opened back in May. Better late than never though to sample some of the city's rarest treats.
The moment I walked into Kempi Deli I was impressed with this rather chic french looking delicatessen. I had heard that it's run by the Kempinski Hotel and is a regular haunt for those in the know. Recently I have been craving sandwiches, maybe I needed a small break from Asian dishes. Looking around this likable deli, it was really hard to stop myself from ordering everything!
Whether its sandwiches, cakes, pastries or breakfasts, Kempi Deli offers more than enough to keep you happy. Its also worth knowing that after 7pm there is a 25% discount off pastries and 50% off bread. Which is in my opinion an amazing offer. No wonder people suddenly came rushing in at that time. It's definitely worth stopping by if you happen to be in Grand Indonesia to grab some snacks to take home.
There are quite a few juices from which you can choose and my favorite one has to be the Black Beach. This is a freshly made juice of berries and lychee. I find it quite hard to get a freshly made juice in the city, so I'm happy to know that there is now a place I can get my fix. If you are a fan of fresh apple juice I would recommend ordering the Wake Up Call juice. Strangely this juice contains no apple but I could swear it tasted like fresh apples. This juice was a real thirst quencher.
As you walk into the deli, the first thing you will notice are the beautifully displayed cakes. Each one more tempting than the next. I actually went to Kempi Deli after reading the rave reviews about the Pistachio Cake but each time I went it was sold out! Which if I'm honest makes me even more curious about it. I did however try the delicious mango cake pictured below. I'm a huge fan of mango and it works like a dream on this light as air cake. The flavor is very subtle and utterly delicious.
Its fair to say that I have tried quite a few eclairs over the years, but this was the first time I tried a coconut one. This dessert did not disappoint, to be honest it tastes like your classic eclair but the tropical coconut flavor adds something quite unique. It was another thumbs up from me. I would recommend this one to go with coffee.
My friend ordered this yummy looking mousse and it would be a crime not to try such a pretty looking thing. As the name suggests it's a mouse so when you break through the chocolate dome, there is a delicious light chocolate mousse with a raspberry flavored centre. On first glance I thought it might be quite sweet but it actually turned out to be perfect for my palate. Once again it was another winning dessert. I can definitely see why Kempi Deli is so popular, the cakes are every bit as good as in Paris.
The eggs benedict at Kempi Deli is somewhat of a legend amongst it''s patrons. I have to confess I have only eaten this dish on a few occasions even though yes, I'm a westerner! I ordered it with the turkey ham but you can also choose pork if you prefer. If you are looking for a special european style breakfast, then I would urge you to try this. The runny poached egg and hollandaise sauce work perfectly together with the soft English muffin to create the most delightful tangy savory flavor.
In case you were wondering how I could possibly eat so much on one trip, I must confess I visited twice in a week being so impressed the first time. The final thing I tried was the Cowboy's Best Sandwich, which is a really flavorsome braised beef and cheese sandwich with caramelized onions. If you are looking for the yum factor then this one definitely has it. Here all the flavors shine through and it's as authentic as you might find in Europe.
Just as a final note, Kempi Deli is quite small so if you are going in a larger group you might want to ring ahead to reserve a table. Discovering this well run bakery has been a real joy. There are many other things I wish to try in the future such as their cut meats and coffee. So no doubt I will be back within the week!
