Chef's busy making the famous bubur
I remember the first time I went to Bubur Kwang Tung as if it was only yesterday. In fact it was well over a year ago that I ventured to Central Jakarta in search of authentic Chinese cuisine. There are a few areas in Jakarta where it's possible to find great Chinese food. Namely Central Jakarta and North Jakarta. Bubur Kwang Tung is famous amongst those in the know, for its  Bubur or  Chinese Porridge.

Personally I'm not a die hard fan of Bubur. I am however aware that many people in the city often crave Chinese comfort food. Lucky for me that I came with a friend who wanted to try the famous Bubur Kepiting.  If you are not familiar with this dish, it's a Chinese Crab Porridge. My friend was excited to try the Bubur, as it's pretty much hyped all over the city. When the porridge arrived, I noticed the portion was huge. There was no way in this world that I could eat one portion alone haha. On tasting the famous Bubur Kepiting, I have to say that neither my friend nor I was particularly impressed. Maybe that was due to the Bubur being overhyped, or simply that Bubur is not my thing. The Jury is still out on this one.

Whenever I go to Bubur Kwang Tung, I always order the  Bihun Seafood.  This dish is well executed. Whoever I take to Bubur Kwang Tung,  ends up enjoying this dish more than what they ordered! Lucky that we in Asia share dishes.  I'm always happy to introduce friends to a yummy dish. Bubur Kwang Tung's  Bihun is not oily. It's my form of comfort food, and  remains one of my favorite dishes at this restaurant.

I do try to be healthy, because if I'm honest in Jakarta, I eat a lot! It's really hard not to with so many temping things to eat! Bubur Kwang Tung's Tofu is a steal at 25k. It's always good  to order & mix with your other dishes. Unless of course you are eating Bubur, then I would suggest ordering it on another occasion.

The vegetables at Bubur Kwang Tung are always cooked perfectly. Going there reminds me of being in Hong Kong. Besides serving Bubur, their other dishes are Cantonese based. I cannot say that they are 100% Canto. Some are definitely Chinese/Indo influenced ,but super enak nonetheless. The vegetables here are crunchy and well seasoned with garlic.

Gurame Goreng Ala Hong Kong, 100k (dependent on weight)
I have ordered  fish dishes on many occasions at Bubur Kwang Tung.  I have to say that all have been great. Bubur Kwang Tung is also famous for its seafood, which is the main reason I go. Here it's possible to eat fresh and delicious seafood 24 hours a day. Which is great if you get a hunger pang late at night! This Gurame was excellent. Topped with sautéed vegetables and sauce, it was the perfect compliment to the super fresh fish. Do order seafood if you visit Bubur Kwang Tung.

Kwang Tung's Sambal
Every time I go to this restaurant, I always ask for their excellent sambal. Note that the sambal is definitely Indonesian inspired, rather than Chinese. It always blows my mind  because I LOVE spice! The sambal is sometimes more spicy than others, so please be careful if you are not a fan of pedas! I find that it's ideal for mixing with my dishes.

Bua Naga Drink, 25k
I've mentioned countless times my love for Dragon Fruit. But the first time I tried this magical drink was at Bubur Kwang Tung. Since that day, I fell in love with this refreshing beverage. I also order the requisite Chinese Tea to compliment my food. I find it impossible to eat Chinese food without tea. I'm quite certain that all the fresh juices at Bubur Kwang Tung are delicious. So do try them if you get the chance.

Bubur Kwang Tung is in no way glamourous. So if you are looking for a chic setting, do not come here. Do come, if you are in search of delicious Chinese food in a similar setting to which you might find in Mong Kok, Hong Kong. I find it's better to visit this restaurant late at night, as it's quicker to travel from South to Central at this time.  Hope you guys enjoy!

I rate this restaurant 7/10
